JAMES BAGSHAW TRACKING VOCALS

We were honored to have James Bagshaw of TEMPLES from Kettering, England summoned to BIG FISH RECORDING by renowned producer Andrew Slater and triple grammy award winning engineer Dave Way who have both worked with Fiona Apple, Macy Gray, The Wallflowers, Michael Jackson, and Pink to name a few.  James was tracking vocals and guitar parts for a duet for Bob’s son Jakob Dylan (The Wallflowers) for his third solo album which will include other celebrity duets. The BIG FISH TEAM had the pleasure to experience their phenomonal September 27th show at The Belly Up. Johnny Marr of The Smiths and Noel Gallagher of Oasis have hailed TEMPLES as the best new British band. Director of Public Relations Josh Perkins had a chat with James the following evening. – PAUL WAROFF

BIG FISH: How did Temples formulate into a quartet?

 

JAMES BAGSHAW: Our bassist Thomas Warmsley and I started writing together; we just recorded four songs with no idea of being a band. Shortly after they were put online and within a couple of weeks we were getting asked to play gigs. We got offered to put out a 7” so then we put a band together. We got two of our friends from Kettering whom we’ve known for years to come on board. We didn’t start as a proper band, the songs were written in the studio and later learned to play live through the recordings, just trying out something different.

BF: You guys are currently on tour in support of the debut Sun Structures; talk a little bit about the tour thus far

 

JB: It’s a pretty long tour; we have a month left doing US and then back to the UK. Were doing one date in Mexico City, a festival there. That will be our first time there, quite a long tour.

 

BF: Let’s take it back to the days before the band existed. What made you pick up music?

 

JB: I got into music when I was seven when I got a ukulele guitar. It was Elvis Presley that made me play music I guess. A few songs from that time I really loved even as a kid like Fats Domino, Booker T, stuff like that. As a kid I thought that was really wonderful kind of music.

 

BF: What would you say your influences are current day?

 

JB: I try not to get influenced by anything that’s going on… (Long pause) you end of becoming a copy of something. When I write I don’t listen to any music at all…

 

BF: Do you feel like you can dichotomize that and draw influences from your own headspace and other’s as well?

 

JB: And sometimes it comes unnaturally and you have to fucking wait a long time for it come…

 

BF: Yes!

 

JB: Sometimes a track takes half an hour to write and sometimes it takes half a year. It just depends on what song it is. Some songs just don’t figure in your head.

 

BF: How would you describe your own sound?

 

JB: I’d say it’s pop music that’s not obvious. It’s catchy, but not in a clinical way.

 

BF: What was the initial concept behind Sun Structures?

 

JB: The only concept really was to write an amount of songs that worked as a collection of songs. How to thread a sound basically. It doesn’t tell one story, the idea of having a luscious atmosphere around every song and making it all coherent, to have the continuity throughout the sound.

 

BF: When I listen to you guys I hear quite a bit of late 1960’s reference…

 

JB: Of course yeah! We love The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Mamas & Papas, to name a few. I’m definitely influenced by that movement and on into the 70’s as well. Glam rock too.

 

BF: What’s the main point you’re trying to get across to other people with your own music?

 

JB: I think I want to excite people and to give people a melody they haven’t heard before. The pop world is so disposable and music is so disposable and having two things that are disposable is just awful. I think if people download our music for free at least we know that the core of the music can’t be cast aside.

 

BF: How would you describe your fan base in the UK?

 

JB: It ranges from sixteen year olds to sixty year olds, across every generation really. A lot of people are really into shoegaze while other people are into more Motown back home.

 

BF: How did you find out about BIG FISH STUDIOS, was it last night?

 

JB:  Yeah, I found out the name of the studio this morning. I didn’t look online because I didn’t want to spoil it. I wanted to get here to see what it was like; it’s exactly how I would want my studio to be.

 

BF: What did you think of the overall results?

 

JB: Amazing! Great outboard, great desks, great sounding room. A perfect choice of amps for every need really. There doesn’t seem to be anything that doesn’t hold character, the B15 is one of the best recording bass amps in the world.

 

BF: Perfect! That’s all I need James, thank you much!
